The new range of top class food mixers from Kenwood

Kenwood Kmix Food Mixer

Hi and welcome to my Kenwood Kmix food mixer review. Kenwood have been around many year now and have a first class reputation for good quality and long lasting kitchen appliances, especially their food mixer range. The Kenwood Chef has been synonymous with the term “food mixer” for over 40 years and that reputation still exists today.

Kenwood Chef food mixers have always had their own distinctive style and are pretty recognisable to most people who find themselves in the market for a new food mixer.  But now Kenwood have been bold in trying a totally new design for the Kmix range.

Quality of the Food Mixer

You would be hard pressed to recognise the Kenwood Kmix food Mixer as a typical product they would supply.  The idea behind the new Kmix range is obviously an attempt to move into the Kitchen Aid and retro styling area that is very popular at the moment.

The Kmix range also contains other retro styles products including blenders, coffee makers and toaster but to name a few, so if you find the color of your mixer is so good you can virtually match off all the small appliances you could imagine to it.

The Kenwood Kmix food Mixer comes in a variety of colors and these are designated by specific color codes such as the Raspberry version of the food mixer is KMX51, the Almond color KMX52 and the Peppercorn (or Black) is KMX54. This is again a move into Kitchen Aid territory and although the color range is no match for the amazing range supplied by Kitchen Aid the colors they have chosen are very good and rich in texture.

The Kenwood Kmix food Mixer is a weighty machine and feels very well built. It is over 8kgs in weight and sits solidly on your work surface on rubberized studs. This is pretty essential with the amount of power this machine has in comparison to Say the Kitchen Aid again.

The Kmix has 500w of power which generally is good enough to deal with most of the cooking you will ever need to do unless you have a family of over 50 people.  The food mixer is built from aluminium and feels wonderful to touch. You get a feeling that this product will be around in your house for a long time.

The 500w motor inside the Kenwood Kmix is pretty quiet in comparison some of the other mixers i’ve had and tried in my years. It’s certainly quieter than the Kitchen Aid and MagiMix products. I love the slow start function the ensures that you don’t end up with more of the mix on your floor than in your bowl but does take a bit of getting used to when you first get it.

As you can see by the picture the speed control has 6 settings that covers most needs and has a good variation of speeds. The Kmix also comes with a splash guard that is attached to the head of the machine and allows you to add more ingredients while the mixers is on without the worry of splashes or overflow.

Functions of the Kmix

The Kmix also has a fold function, if you flick the control knob to the right then the fold function kicks in. The fold functions job is the help to incorporate ingredients and control mixing by stopping every so often to allow you to add more ingredients. It’s a clever little function that does make your life a bit easier. It also uses a planetary mixing action that ensures you get all the ingredients mixed properly.

I’ve read on several web sites about how the mixer does not get to the edge of the bowl which means you need to get in with the spatula and push the mixer from the sides. Let me tell you know this is not true and is generally down to setup of your machine.

Ensuring the right height of the mixing tool is important and easy to do. All you need to do is adjust the bolt at the top of the mixing tool until it is very close to the bottom of the bowl. Be careful to make sure it is not touching the bowl though as this will scratch and wear down the tool and the bowl.

Cleaning

Cleaning the Kenwood Kmix food Mixer is also very easy, just remove the bowl from the base and clean with warm water and washing up liquid. You can wash the bowl and tools by hand or put them in a dishwasher but never used abrasive steel brushed or wool or you will damage your appliance.

I find that if you clean the tools before they go hard it is the best solution and very quick. The tools are specially prepared and most mixers just fall off with much effort. The other thing I love about this machine is that there are very few angles to build up grease and dirt. The design has been well thought out and makes keeping to food mixer looking like new.

The bowl is 5litres in size and can handle a good size of mixture and Kenwood recommend the following amount that you must not exceed:

I good size loaf including water usually come in at around 1.5kg so as you can see I doubt that you will ever get to the point where you are reaching the high recommended levels. If you do you can just split your mixture into two and mix that way.

The Kenwood Kmix food Mixer includes the ability to add attachments. I have listed just a few of the attachments now available for the machine and there are more and more coming out all the time.

The Kenwood Kmix range of food Mixers is a great tool and should give you years have trouble free service.
